South Pole
4 January 2008 Due to depart from Punta Arenas, Chile, but flight out on Illusyon plane
delayed due to windy weather at Patriot Hills, Antarctica
6 January 2008 Flight finally departs late evening for Patriot Hills
7 January 2008 Twin Otter flight on to 88 degrees south (with refuel at Thiel Mountans)
to ski the last two degrees
12 January 2008 Group split, with some progressing at a faster speed to continue skiing the
last two degrees, whilst the rest of us suffering from altitude sickness and
frost bite injuries take a slower pace. (The altitude at the South Pole is
2800m, but it feels considerably higher due to low air pressure at the Poles.)
13 January 2008 Ice runway 'constructed' to enable evacuation of one of the group with more
severe frost damage to his fingers
18 January 2008 Reach 89 degrees south. Build an igloo ... and then sleep in it!
20 January 2008 Second ice runway 'constructed' to enable the Twin Otter plane to land again
and bring us closer to the Pole (largely due to lack of time to ski the whole
remaining distance). Ski the last 10kms to arrive at the bottom of the world!
23 January 2008 Due to depart from Patriot Hills but delayed due to bad weather
25 January 2008 Finally return to Punta Arenas, Chile
